What Is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a type of cosmetic ear surgery meant to alter the shape, size, or position of your ears. Otoplasty does not change your ability to hear or move your ears but is generally done on both ears in order to maintain symmetry.

Otoplasty may be the right procedure for you if you’ve had previous surgery and are unhappy with the results, have had a serious injury that altered the look of your ears, your ears stick out from your head, or your ears are too large in proportion to your head. It can not only improve the function of your ear, it can improve your self-image.

In your consultation for Otoplasty Chelmsford, Dr. Lee will discuss your concerns and expectations from these cosmetic changes. Dr. Lee will recommend a treatment plan based on what you’d like after reviewing your medical history. You’ll also take before and after photos in order to help plan and demonstrate the changes to be made. Otoplasty is available for both children and adults.

What Happens During Otoplasty?
Depending on your consultation and what type of work is to be done, this surgery can take about two hours to complete.
  • This surgery can be done under either local anesthesia or under general anesthesia. Dr. Lee will go over with you what you can expect from your particular surgery so you know what to do before you come in and what to expect the day of surgery. You may need some cartilage and skin removed in order to improve the shape of your ears.
  • In this case, the incisions can occur behind or in the folds of your ear. Your cartilage will be folded and readjusted according to your surgical plan, and stitches will be used to close the incisions. Once your surgery is complete, Dr. Lee will dress your ears in bandages to protect them. Depending on the extent of your surgery, complete recovery times can vary. Your results will be immediate.

OTOPLASTY FAQS

You might consider otoplasty if you’ve had previous ear surgery and are dissatisfied with the results, you’ve suffered an injury to your ears, or you lack self-esteem due to unhappiness with the appearance. You can also choose to have otoplasty for your child if prominent ears are an issue.

You are likely to have some soreness for up to a few days and possible bruising depending on the extent of the procedure. You can take pain medication as needed if prescribed by Dr. Lee, or you can talk to him about over-the-counter alternatives instead. It’s important for you to keep as much pressure off your ears and not lay on them, particularly when you sleep.

Recovery usually takes about two weeks. It may take a full four to six weeks before you can return to heavy lifting or vigorous exercise. Once your bandages are removed, you will see immediate changes.

The scar usually is well placed and well hidden. For correction of prominent ears, the scar is usually placed in the crease behind the ears. The scar will also fade over time.

The cost of this surgery will vary for patients based on the extent of treatment, techniques used, general care, and more. In your initial consultation, you’ll discuss any questions you have along with financing or payment options.
