Saline vs Silicone Breast Implants: Which is better?

Advantages: Most affordable option; Surgeon fills implants to the ideal size while you are on the operating table
Drawbacks: Implant rippling is more likely to occur; Does not feel as natural as silicone gel; Implants deflate rapidly if ruptured, putting you in the position for an unexpected surgery to remove and replace them

SILICONE IMPLANTS

Advantages: Looks and feels extremely natural compared to saline implants; Mimics real breast tissue; Leaks slowly if rupture occurs, giving you plenty of time to schedule implant removal and replacement surgery
Drawbacks: Costs slightly more than saline implants; Surgeon and patient must select implant size ahead of time

Your Procedure

While you are under general anesthesia, Dr. Lee will make an incision. He typically places the incision in the inframammary crease or inferior breast fold.

Patients who are susceptible to keloid scarring may do better with a transaxillary, or armpit, incision. He rarely uses the transumbilical approach, which involves passing the implant through an incision at the navel. There is also the periareolar incision method, through which the implant passes through an incision around the areolar margin.

Above vs Below the Muscle Breast Implants

Dr. Lee can place breast implants either above or below the muscle. Submuscular breast implants are necessary for thin patients to decrease the chance of implant rippling and visibility. The pectoralis muscle is a thin sheath about 1/4” thick. It provides coverage to hide the edges of the implant. Placing implants below the muscle requires dissection to elevate the muscle off the ribcage.

Your Recovery
